James Read graduated from Imperial College School of medicine and completed his postgraduate surgical training in London.  He completed fellowships in robotic cancer surgery and the royal college fellowship in advanced laparoscopy and exenterative surgery.

In addition to his private practice he has a high volume NHS practice at the the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford.  He is JAG certified for colonoscopy. He trains surgeons at the minimally access training unit. His career focus is on enhanced recovery and minimally invasive surgery and has presented his research internationally.  He is registered with the GMC and PHIN, a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and a member of the Association of Coloproctologists of Great Britain and Ireland. He is a trustee of the GUTS cancer charity and co-lead  for the Surrey and Sussex cancer alliance lower GI pathway.
